Technology shapes our lives, and while it’s easier for younger generations to adapt, some have been keeping up with it for decades. My grandfather, Cheema, is one of them. At nearly 80, he remains curious about technology, keeping up with each new wave, from 3D printing to AI.
I think it is important for everyone to keep up with technology and adapt to the rapidly changing world. Even if it might be hard for many people to stay up to date, it can make their lives easier and more enjoyable. My grandfather, who is nearly 80, is amazed at how quickly an AI chatbot answers his questions, whereas he still had to go to the library to look things up when he was young.
Born in 1945 in a small village in Tamil Nadu, India, he grew up in a time when modern technology was still far away. Back then, the tools we now take for granted didn’t exist. No smartphones, no computers, just simple machines and manual labor. Despite that, he was always drawn to engineering. By the time he finished high school in 1960 and went on to study mechanical engineering, the world was just starting to industrialize.
Working as an engineer in the 1960s and 70s was a different world. Many things were slower and more mechanical. After starting as a trainee in 1965, my grandfather gained a lot of experience in the manufacturing industry. In 1981, he became manager of manufacturing at a spring factory, which was started by Germans. Over time, he then transitioned from manufacturing to marketing, gaining more experience by working with other companies. This new position opened opportunities to travel, and he soon visited Germany for the first time in 1989. In the years that followed, my grandfather expanded his international contacts from Europe to Japan and the United States, conducting business all around the globe.
One thing that’s always impressed me about my grandfather is how he never let the rapid pace of change intimidate him. When he was in his 60s, he decided to start his own manufacturing business, in which he is still active today. He was also one of the first to get a smartphone, which he used to stay connected to his business. He quickly adapted to computers, learning the software that helped him manage his company from anywhere.
Today, his interest in technology is still strong. He is fascinated by artificial intelligence and curious about how it could be applied in the medical field in the future. Another technology that interests him is 3D printing, especially its use in creating metal components for the automotive industry.
Staying connected to technology doesn’t only help you professionally. It also makes your life more convenient. My grandfather’s journey shows that staying curious about technology is important no matter how fast it changes or how old you are. It helps make life more efficient, connects us to others, and opens new opportunities. He’s proof that it’s never too late to embrace what’s next.
